A cry for justice – ‘’18-year-old girl rescued by Raksha Nepal’’

Rescued girl’s version- “Either let me die, or give death sentences to the rapist father and grandfather”

Kavre. After getting sexually exploited countless times by her father, a traumatized 18-year-old girl registered a complaint against him to the concerned authorities and was arrested by the police. It has been revealed by the teenager that the KavreSubba Gaun-2 resident PrakashBahadurKarki, unsatisfied even with his four wives, started raping his own daughter.

While studying in the ninth grade, Pooja (name changed to protect the identity) was raped by her own father Prakash who had returned from abroad and created different situations to take advantage of her. At a very young age when her father was abroad, she had been sexually exploited by her grandfather, as well. In the hopes of justice she finally mustered up the courage to tell her father about it. However, instead of taking any action, Prakash saying that he wanted to talk about the incident, covered her mouth and raped her. At that moment, Pooja was studying in the ninth grade. In the days that followed, she had to play a role in his life equivalent to being his mistress. Sending his wife to work and raping Pooja as soon as they were alone became a usual practice for Prakash.

Prakash pampered her after she passed her S.L.C exams with good grades, bytaking her out for drives and meals, buying her a mobile phone, but sexually exploiting her throughout. Pooja wanted to study and become a nurse and Prakashassured her, “If you do as I tell you, I will take care of it.” On the 30th of Shrawan, (15th August 2014) an incident took place, which exposed all the hidden facts so far. Deciding that she would rather die than become her father’s “Mistress”, Poojatook the poison and tried to kill herself. She was, however, saved by someone who had witnessed her attempt of suicide. Pooja had written in her suicide note that dying would be better than living as her father’s mistress, and after she ended her life, the father and grandfather who sexually exploited her must be given death sentences.

When Pooja was rushed to the hospital, the doctors started to ask her questions, when she told them her story. With the evidence that was collected, the police arrested Prakash and the case is to be settled in court. Pooja, on the other hand, had to live like a prisoner even in the hospital. At the moment, Raksha Nepal, who has been fighting against rape and sexual violence for past 10 years, has come forward to rescue to give her protection and shelter. She is being treated psychologically for her deep traumatized condition. Pooja has only one demand, “Either let me die, or give death sentences to my father and grandfather.”

How did Pooja get raped?

Pooja was a little girl of 10 years, who lived in the lowlands in the river basin of her village. Her father worked abroad. One day, her grandfather fell ill and her mother asked her to stay overnight and take care of the sick grandfather. At night, Pooja’sgrandfather made her sleep with him, as she was young and would probably get scared to sleep alone. However, the sick minded man started touching her and eventually raped her. Pooja was not aware of what had just happened. The next day, there was excess bleeding and her grandfather took her to the hospital himself. Later he raped her time and again, consequently Pooja was bleeding heavily again. Pooja’s mother came to know about this incident of her grandfather raping her.

However, the fear of humiliation and loosing face in front of people led Pooja’s mother never listening to her. Which led an innocent child getting sexually abused continuously. When Poojafinally started to understand what was going on with her life, she stopped going to her grandfather’s house. Three years after her grandfather raped her, Pooja’s father returned home from abroad. With the hope of finding some solace from her father, she told everything that had happened in his absence. Unfortunately, he turned out to be as sick minded as her grandfather. Prakash, Pooja’s father, also started to rape her as well – she was forced to play the role of a fifth wife in his life.

Pooja saw no other alternatives. There was no one who would listen to the injustice she was suffering, and the mental anxiety building up inside her. All these led her to decide to an attempt to commit suicide. He has arrested PrakashBahadurKarki and is in the course of taking forward the case as well. What’s left to see is whether Pooja gets justice to the ordeal that she has been through!!
